Where Is Huck?

header gladiator report

As we come closer to the one hundredth, Shonda is beginning to hit her stride again. We are seeing  the elements of what made “Scandal” great. Anytime a gladiator is in trouble, the team rallies again and this is what we saw when Huck (Guillermo Diaz) was taken away by yet another of his psycho girlfriends. (Hey Huck, don’t you know how to find women that don’t know how to kill and mutilate?) The man has a problem.

There was a lot of symbolism and history in this episode. References were made all over the place to the rich history of the show. Face it, Shonda isn’t that original. She uses names and plot devices more than once in her shows. Putting Meredith Grey on a plane plunging to the earth is not a unique idea. Neither is allowing Ben (Peter Crause) on “The Catch” to build a house for him and Alice. In fact , it is the third time this plot device was used and by the romantic male lead of one of her shows. First, Derek had planned to build their dream house by a lake , then Fitz sprung the house in Vermont on Olivia. (To this day, he has not sold it and has the hope that she will be with him eventually) Huck and the body of Jennifer were taken by Meg to a quarry outside Washington. This quarry looked vaintly familiar, it was the same place where Olivia was traded by her captors and rescued by Stephen.  Into the water they went, to their water deaths. Ho hum, didn’t Beckett and Castle also sink or swim when they were forced into the ocean? It’s a good thing that Fillion is a certified scuba diver. But Huck, knew he had to stay calm or he would die. Once again his killer training comes to his rescue. It is ironic that the villain of the show, Rowan is egging him on and trying to save his life at the same time. He is also trying to save the other gladiators as well. Olivia returns to her familiar white trench coat of Season One . The color metamorphosis of Season Five is a memory. OPA is on the case of trying to find their own. The team hasn’t acted together since the kidnapping of Season Four.  Even Abby is reunited with the team.

But unfortunately, Abby is filled with remorse. She didn’t realize that by making her deal that they would hurt Huck. Abby has been put in precarious situation. She is caught between her loyalty for OPA and the White House. By trading Fields for Cyrus, she has sealed Huck’s fate. Realistically, she has made a deal with the devil and can’t cope with her decision. She knows how Olivia feels about Huck and also how she feels about Huck. With her guilt, she walks down to the Oval and spills her heart to Fitz. She sadly says how she needs a friend now, because she knows how Liv is going to take this news. With Fitz dating Angela, Liv feels alone as well. She turns to her newest gladiator as the rest of the team works to find their friend. Marcus can’t understand why no one wants to involve him in this case. After all, his life is so much better since Liv came into his life and he became a gladiator.

The gladiators work better as a team, and when I say the team, I mean everyone. Key players like Jeff Perry and Bellamy Young were given vacations as others have been in past episodes. Rhimes also has taken chances with this plot device used on “How to Get Away With the Murder.” Perhaps this device was used to take the pressure off of Washington who was pregnant with her son and also to allow Goldwyn to go on the Trail last summer.  Fans were not happy with these developments, especially involving Fitz with a new woman. Face it, the heart and soul of this series is the runaway romance between Pope and the President. After five seasons,  the “First” couple finally got a divorce so Mellie moved ahead on her road to the White House.  History played a big part in last night’s episode when phrases like “Over a cliff” and Olivia threatening Abby with a chair flashes back to the last time Liv went off in a PTSD fit when she took care of Andrew.

Another part of gladiator history was when Quinn took Charlie and confronted the psycho bitch, Meg . When she opened the door, Quinn stuck a gun to her head and said where is he? Quinn has a serious connection with Huck since he was the one who taught her all about torture and killing. She is a good student and uses his technique to torture her. This makes her mad when Meg laughs and says this is why he loved me more than you and then spits in her face. Men like to torment women on this show, whether it is how Andrew tormented Liv to kill him or how Fits sexually tormented Liv with the dirtiest phone call ever on television. Quinn ain’t havin it , so she kills her. This doesn’t do any good, now they have no leads for Huck.

Jake to the rescue when he remembers there is a tracking gps on Jennifer . He and Liv set out to find an almost drowned Huck. Once again, Huck is tormented by the “evil Huck”. The other “Huck” was seeing his past and the life with his son and how he was robbed of so much. One of the most intense moments of his life was when he finally got to see his son in that train station at 7:52 in the morning. This is a significant moment in Huck’s past. Guillermo Diaz shines brilliantly in this episode as well as the old Quinn played psychotically by Katie Lowes.

Every series has this moment. One of the family is in surgery and every one is gathered around waiting for the news.  Olivia indeed has a family, and they are all gathered together for their friend. But then, the moment every gladiator has waited for arrives with his army of Secret Service people. Olivia’s hero and prince, Fitzgerald Grant. (Tony Goldwyn) He arrives as the voice of reason and preaches the gospel of forgiveness. He forgave Liv for Defiance , she forgave him for his sins, and now she had to forgive Abby.  The tears well up as Abby holds Liv’s hand as they wait for Huck. This is not the first time that Liv had to wait for someone to wake up , once again shades of Fitz’s assassination attempt crossed fans minds. The show ends as Charlie stands with a broken heart, Huckleberry Quinn returns once again.

There is much debate on who should be this week’s MVG. I think the person that saved the day was Fitz. He knows that Abby and Liv have a lot of history and there have been times that Abby has gone to bat for her friend.  He also knows that despite the wars and arguments, these two have each other’s backs. Olivia thought so much of Abby it was the reason that she introduced her to the White House during the second election . She had faith in her . Abby’s problem is that she wanted to be Olivia , in that case, she lost Abby along the way. Fitz was the voice of reason when he could see how much Abby was hurting. Goldwyn’s presence has been missed for quite a while and we are glad to see that he is indeed back. One of the central plots of the show and what made “Scandal” so great was the relationship of Olitz. Perhaps this is just the beginning.

Samantha (Zoey Perry) informs Abby she is tired and bored with her. What is her next evil plan when she learns that Huck is alive?

No matter what terrible things these two have done to each other, they always end up together? This is the heart and soul of “Scandal.” For 99 shows, Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn have kept viewers cheering for this couple. In the 100th show, what happened if Olivia said no to Defiance?

After she was preached about forgiveness by Fitz, Olivia forgave Abby ( Darby Stanchfield ) as they waited for their family member, Huck to be alright.

Huck(Guillermo Diaz) looks like he is going to be alright. But what is this going to do to Charlie and Quinn? (Katie Lowes)

Gladiator or Traitor ?

header gladiator report

Okay gladiators, it looks like that one of the original gladiators has got herself in quite a mess. Abby is more power hungry than Olivia.  But what is with all of this talk about Vermont for the soon to be former President Grant? Does this mean that even if we can’t see it? Olitz is back together? Anything is possible .

We finally returned to the night that Vargas was shot and the biggest surprise of all is Abby.  Before the election, Abby had already started to plan Fitz’s post Presidency. Now usually when a President leaves office, he does things like write his memoirs and build his Presidential library. Abby is one step ahead and is already working on establishing the Grant Foundation. Fitz has made his own plans. He wants to build the Grant Presidential Library in Vermont. Hmmm. Abby argues that he can be great and change the world. He tells her off , after all the man has served his country as a Naval officer , Governor, and President. He wants to have a normal life and leave this “blood sucking swamp.”  But unbeknownst to Fitz, Abby has been given an offer of three hundred million dollars if she plays their game. Their game is a dangerous one.  Marjorie (Zoe Perry) and her partner dangle the bait in front of her.  They know how to tempt a power hungry Abby and that is whisper the word “Run for President.”  But Abby is happy being the Chief of Staff for Fitz. So she thinks.

abby makes a deal with the devil

Before election night, Abby shares some rare bourbon with Cyrus. She questions the decision and asks him how did he know that Vargas was Presidential material? He says that he just knows and that it is charisma and good looks. Fitz had it and so does Vargas. But then he warns her that after being with Fitz, she may never be whole again. She returns to the Oval  and continues to hear Fitz ramble on about Vermont and how she will be coming there. She fires back and tells the President that Liv will never follow him to Vermont. He tells her that is low even for you.  After another berating by Fitz, she makes her decision and tells Marjorie  she is in. But the three hundred million doesn’t come without a price. It turns out that it is a cover for a plot . If she decides to bail, they will say that it was a cover for a North Korean terrorist organization and Abby will be arrested for treason. She is informed that Vargas is going to be shot. abby and fitz on election

We move ahead to election night and Abby is encouraged by Mellie. She says we can do anything now. At this point, Mellie and her staff think she will win. The final votes come in and as we found out, Vargas is shot. In the midst of the chaos, Abby receives a call that it has been done and further instructions. She is having second thoughts and then she is told to go lock down the hospital. At the hospital is Meg (Crazy girl that Huck is dating) , she is posing as a nurse and gives her a packet of bullets to switch with the other ones. In case she has doubts, Meg shows her a video of a beaten up and kidnapped Leo. Illegally she has a medic start an autopsy  After the autopsy is stopped by orders of the President, she goes in and takes the bullet until she sees that the SSA coming back and she takes it upon herself to pull out the final bullet. She is in shock when Cyrus is framed for the shooting  She believes in him and tells him she will go to war for him. But when she goes to get advice from David, she gets a surprise . David is dating the evil bitch from hell herself. It seems there is no one that is safe . She finds out that Jennifer is alive. The organization gets word of this and before you know it, Huck is shot by Meg and so is Jennifer. Abby is in bed with the Devil.

Without a doubt, Darby Stanchfield is MVG of the week. Abby has not had an easy road with her ex who took away her confidence and self esteem. Though they do not have the same endearment as ‘the Twisted Sisters’, Abby and Olivia have stuck it out despite their little squabbles. She calls herself Olivia’s most loyal gladiator and she has proven herself time and time again. Her shining example is when Olivia was kidnapped and she was shut out of every meeting in the White House. But Abby came through with Steven and he was successful in rescuing her where the White House and the gladiators had failed. Abby didn’t have ambition until she was unceremoniously made Fitz’s campaign manager after he had berated Olivia and put her in her place. (I’m talking to my wife) When Liv left with Jake, she was made the Communications Director in the Second Term.  Along with the others, Abby felt abandoned. Despite these fights, Abby and Olivia had each other’s back. Liv would go to bat against Charles (Abby’s ex) and Abby would try to patch things up with Liv’s ex (Fitz). Darby gave a blue ribbon performance tonight as she fought with her conscience about her decision. She truly got in bed with the devil. She has shown she has more ambition than Olivia. Power is truly her drug. With heroes like PTSD Olivia and Cyrus Beene, what would you expect?

Is this what’s in the future for Fitzgerald Grant? Hope so. He seems to think so.

What The Huck?

header gladiator report

Shonda has been changing the game ever since the show returned this year. Using the same plot devices as “HTGWM”, she has been telling the story of the election and Vargas’s assassination in each character’s point of view. We have been seeing characters that usually aren’t the most cuddly of characters. MIA this week are Mellie , Cyrus, and of course, Fitz. (Did this MIA for Mr Goldwyn have anything to do with his campaigning for Hillary?) This week the episode is seen through the eyes of Huck . Actually it is good to see lesser featured actors in these new episodes. It’s almost like seeing a whole new “Scandal”.

Olivia can’t trust her father , she never could. But hey look at all the crap he’s done. Killing Harrison , keeping Maya prisoner and making Liv think she’s dead, and killing Jerry Jr. with a deadly virus. That’s just a grocery list of his activities. Well this time he’s crossed the line and after trying to get Fitz and Jake to kill him and failed. She will do it herself and Huck will do it. Holding a gun on Rowan, Huck is told that if he kills him it won’t do any good, he is being manipulated and the thugs will not at all think twice about killing Olivia. He also tells Huck that there is a traitor among them. He immediately thinks its Quinn and the two draw guns. Now the team must bond to find the mole. (Another nod to history, the “Mole” was Billy Chambers who was going to bring down the Grant administration with Amanda Tanner’s help. Season One)  Olivia knows there is one person that she can’t trust and she figures she will be free when he is dead. He was the one who was pushing her for the Oval and it wasn’t her idea at all. Once again , she is being manipulated and she is tired of his antics.

olivia and huck talk

Olivia (Kerry Washington) tells Huck (Guillermo Diaz) she wants him to kill Rowan

But who is the mole? Huck realizes that someone may be playing him and so he has David take him to prison and he meets up with Becky. (You remember her? she tricked Huck into being framed for shooting Fitz.) Becky said that he had someone who was playing him right now. She also pointed out that he had too big of  a soft spot and that was his weakness. Meg ups the game by asking Huck to get her a private meeting with Olivia. He thinks that she is the mole and threatens her with drugs to tell the truth. Rowan placed a tracking device in Sandra’s corpse and Olivia sees the woman murdered. Huck tried to give Rowan the benefit of the doubt that people can change. Once again, Huck is made the patsy for the love of a woman. Meg is reunited with her friend, the late Jennifer and everyone has a happy ending. Once again with his vulnerability attacked and a vicious cycle between good and evil, the MVG is Huck. But wait….a new wrinkle in the ointment. Meg shoots Jennifer and then Huck.

huck and new girlfriend

Huck has to learn to trust the right people ..including Meg (Phoebe Neidhardt)

The Shadow Orgainization arranged for this to happen and you will never guess who is behind it….

its abby the bitch

She isn’t a gladiator anymore.. Abby (Darby Stanchfield) makes a deal with the mysterious lady (Zoe Perry)

Abby is now the most ambitious and evil . She is making deals with the devil and it appears that she had Huck shot. But…. has Abby reached the top of ambition? Will Huck survive the bullets? Can David save her from herself? If Olivia is in danger, who will be her knight in shining armor?

Tonight’s OMG episode was directed by none other than Peeping Tom…Tom Verica
